I guess many of you are aware that women are very prone to certain things… Now that the weather has gone quite chilly, it is important to take precautions to prevent annoying ailments.

UTI (Urinary Tract Infection) /Cystitis

So many girls out there suffer from UTI/Cystitis and especially in Winter, we need to take care. When the weather is colder, we tend to forget to drink enough water, and can get dehydrated. This causes all sorts of problems, and aggravates symptoms of Urinary tract infections.

First of all; the symptoms as most people get them:

1. Burning sensation while urinating (and after)
2. Discomfort/ pain in the lower abdomen
3. Frequent/more urgent urination
4. Fever (SERIOUS!)
5. Chills/ trembling (SERIOUS!)

If you suffer from the first three symptoms, it may be a good idea to try an over the counter medicine for Cystitis, such as Cystocalm made by Galpharm. It is just basically a course of some sachets you dissolve in water three times a day, for two days. It may work for you and save you a trip to the GP. If after the two day course it is not improving, see your GP because UTI does not cure itself! The GP usually treats this on the basis of your symptoms. There will be no need for a urine test. You will be prescribed an antibiotic and that should take care of it.

The latter two symptoms indicate that your UTI has travelled upwards to the kidneys; this is a very serious thing and you should immediately see the GP, don’t waste any time!

General precautions and good habits:

1. Drink lots of fluids! At least 2-3 liters every day. The more diluted your urine, the less discomfort you feel.
2. Urinate frequently, try to go every 3 hours, so you do not collect urine in your bladder which will make you more uncomfortable.
3. Empty your bladder completely; leaning backwards when you urinate may help.
4. Drink cranberry juice; this works as a diuretic; that means it makes you go more often.

The more often you go to the loo, the better it is because then the bacteria get flushed out of your bladder more quickly.

Prevention measures:

1. Wipe from front to back, never the other way around!
2. Keep warm. This is the wrong season to be wearing short tops and jackets!
3. Practice good hygiene
4. Always urinate before and after sex!
